Growing up, my mum used to call our genetic predisposition to acne the ‘bad skin genes’, almost like it was a living thing we had to constantly fight against. I remember her sighing after another unsuccessful home remedy for my acne. “I’m sorry, girl,” she’d say, her eyes filled with guilty sorrow. “I guess you got my bad skin genes.”
