8 Top Tips To Keep Acne at Bay

To have healthy, smooth, clear skin is the ultimate skincare goal. Acne is multi-factorial and the cause of our acne differs from one another. Furthermore, everyone’s skin is unique and a more personalized approach to acne care is needed. Here are Jasmine’s top tips on keeping your acne in check.

1. Double Cleanse in the Evening

Throughout the day, your skin is bombarded by all kinds of nasties, such as pollutants and bacteria. Double cleansing at night gives your skin its best start to clean fresh skin, allowing your skin to better absorb any form of skincare you apply afterwards. It also helps in reducing bumpy/texture skin, which are essentially clogs. By double cleansing, you can skip toner and move on to a hydrating serum as the next step.

Start off by using a gentle yet thorough cleanser that can remove makeup or sunscreen. After that, second cleanse with a gentle cleanser. Be sure to give each cleanse a 60 seconds massage to allow the cleansing agents to clean effectively.

Jasmine Recommends:
Use Skinlycious Soothing Cleansing Gel  as the first cleanse to remove waterproof makeup and grimes without disturbing the balance of your skin. Turmeric and French pine bark extracts soothes skin while wheat and olive-derived moisturizing ingredients moisturises skin!

Use Skinlycious Calming Cleanser as the second cleanse to gently remove any leftover dirt and balance skin pH. Calamine calms skin while olive-derived ingredient moisturises

2. Choose Gentle Cleansers & Don’t Over Wash

Not all cleansers are created equal. Using the wrong cleanser results in imbalance weak skin, making your acne even worse. Harsh cleansers strip the skin’s natural oil worsening oily skin while leaving dry skin with rougher flaky skin. A good cleanser should leave you with a clean but not tight feeling. You can be assured that Skinlycious cleansers cleanse well without drying out your skin.

Oily skin people might be tempted to always keeping your face clean by constantly cleansing it. But truth is, this can do more harm than good. Washing twice a day is sufficient. If you wash too often, you will tend to dry out your skin. Our body works such that they will compensate what they think it lacks of. That means, your excessive washing will cause your face to dry up and your face will generate more oil to compensate the dryness. The increased oil production will just make your acne condition worse. If you exercise and sweat a lot, you can wash your face after that but be sure to apply hydrating serum again after washing

3. Exfoliate Regularly But Don’t Over Exfoliate

Exfoliating is the process of removing dead cells on our skin surface. It unclogs pores and gets rid of dry, dull and flaky skin that accumulates on the skin surface. Some of us who are more genetically acne-prone, our skin cell turnover cycle might be longer than the usual 28 days cycle. Hence, by exfoliating, we help to normalize our skin cell turnover cycle.

When you exfoliate, you help uncover the fresh new cells below. If done right, your skin will feel softer, smoother, and brighter.

But how do you know if you’re doing too much?

The classic signs of over-exfoliating are irritation, redness & breakouts especially small pimples. Keep an eye out for those and make sure to always read the label.

Jasmine Recommends:
Skinlycious Glow Exfoliant is specifically developed to break down pimples, blackheads, cystic acne and removes built-up layers of dead skin cells. It can be used as a daily spot treatment twice a day. However, if used as a full-face exfoliant, use only 2-3 times a week in the evening only. It is suitable for all skin types.

4. Hydrate and Moisturise To The Level Your Skin Needs

People with acne usually have oily skin and think that there’s no need to moisturise. However, people with oily skin often have dehydrated skin and need hydration.

Hydrating is adding water to the skin while moisturizing is more of adding oil to the skin and preventing water loss. Every skin type, whether it’s dry or oily, needs hydration, as our skin cells can’t produce water. How much oil you need depends on how oily your skin is. Customizing the right amount of water & oil is key to balanced, glowing skin. Learn how to find your perfect oil and water balance your skin needs in this video.

Jasmine Recommends:
With Skinlycious, you can customise the amount of moisture(oil) and water your skin needs.

The oil-free Skinlycious Hydrating Serum adds and holds water in your skin, helping to regulate skin sebum production. While Skinlycious Barrier Booster Moisturiser adds a small amount of plant oils into your skin while boosting skin barrier, making your skin softer and firmer.

The Skinlycious Balancing Facial Oil can be layered on for people with dry skin that require more moisture. This same blend of plant oils is found in a small percentage in Barrier Booster Moisturiser.

5. Spot Treat active acne

Targeting specific areas with active acne on your face is crucial to stop acne from getting out of control. Good spot treatment products can deeply penetrate the pores and dissolve clogs, as well as reduce P. acnes bacteria. Bacteria spreads, hence it’s best to nip acne at the bud before it spreads and leaves scars.

Jasmine Recommends:
Acids-based Skinlycious Glow Exfoliant reduces acne overnight by penetrating deeply and unclog pores to break down pimples, blackheads, cystic acne.

Vitamins-based Skinlycious Clarifying Serum reduces acne, pimples, bumpy skin without drying out the skin.

Do note that you are unique and your skin might or might not suit acids or vitamins. Best way to know is to do our half face test and determine if your skin is suitable for acids or vitamins or both.

6. Use Sunscreen

We all know that the sun causes premature ageing of the skin. By not using sunscreen, we are putting ourselves at risk of developing wrinkles, pigmentation, saggy skin, and even skin cancer. Start using sunscreen early.

A lot of acne products work by exfoliation, so our skin is actually thinner while we are on acne treatments. If sunscreen is not applied, the risk of premature ageing, especially pigmentation, is even higher when our skin is thin.

When I had acne, my doctor did advise me to use sunscreen but I really didn’t like the greasy feeling and some brands even made my face look very white, so I didn’t use sunscreen. That probably explains why I got wrinkles(deep ones) when I am just in my early 20s. Thankfully, they were gone with proper skincare products.

Jasmine Recommends:
The Skinlycious Multi Protection Mineral Sunscreen is a sheer, non-greasy and non-sticky mineral / physical / inorganic non-nano sunscreen that protects your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Formulated with Olive leaf extract, a natural antioxidant, anti-pollutant to give added protection to your skin from environment stresses.

7. Observe Good Hygiene

You’ll be surprised at how little things like, changing your pillow case regularly, cleaning your phone and wearing clean mask or keeping hair away from your face could make such a big difference to having clear skin.

Here’s some general hygiene tips that you can observe when you have acne :

– Clean your hands before you wash your face.

– After washing your face, use a facial tissue to dry your face rather than a face towel as there might be a possibility that the face towel is accumulating bacteria. Spread the whole facial tissue over your face and press into your face gently, allowing the water to absorb. Don’t rub or try not to reuse the facial tissue on other parts as that might spread the acne bacteria to other parts of the face. I usually use two facial tissues to dry my face.

– Change your pillow case frequently.

– Clean your handphone using alcohol swabs regularly.

– Do not touch your face with your hands.

– Clean your make up brushes regularly.

8. Be Self Aware Of Your Own Acne Triggers

As acne is multi-factorial, we need to know what is our own potential acne triggers. Everybody has different triggers, so you need to be more self conscious. It’s like soya products, spicy food, “heaty” food triggers my acne but it might be different for you. Once you breakout, think back what might have caused your breakout.

Could it be because of diet? Stress? Your not so healthy lifestyle like late nights? Period? Comedogenic makeup?
