Review of Konjac / Konnyaku Sponge – Second and Final Try

Found a more reliable brand of Konjac Sponge

In my previous post, I did a review on Konjac Sponge and concluded that it made my face oilier even though I felt that my face was smoother. However, I still really like the idea of having a gentle exfoliator that has a long history to prove that it’s safe for the skin structure even after long term use. Since I was unsure of the source of the previous Konjac sponge that I used, I wanted to try another one as I am really keen to add this to my skin care routine.

I was in Jakarta and saw this brand, My Konjac Sponge. It is made in Korea and is free of chemicals and additives.

I thought this would be perfect to test out Konjac/Konnyaku sponge again.  This time round, I bought a few and asked some of my customers to try as well. I was thinking if it’s good, I would bring it into Singapore to sell. After all, some people do not cleanse properly, leading to clog pores and then acne. I was hoping that this would help reduce the occurrence of acne for my customers. There were a few different variations of it but I decided to choose the Bamboo Charcoal Sponge suitable for acne skin and the French Green Clay suitable for normal and combination skin.

This is how it looks like without the packaging. This teardrop shape is actually more ergonomically friendly to use than the round shape sponge. It’s much easier to massage than the round shape sponge.

My Results

After a few days of using, my face became oilier again(to my dismay)! Face was smoother though. I stopped using the sponge and switched back to Skinlycious routine. After a week, my face was back to normal.

Other Customers’ Results

Feedback from other customers (6 Bamboo charcoal, 6 French Green Clay) :

– 2 out of 12 felt that their face is smoother; +me, so 3 felt smoother complexion.
– 2 out of 12 felt that their face is less oily.
– 4 out of 12 felt that their face is more oily; +me, so 5 had oilier complexion.
– 6 out of 12 felt no difference.
– 1 with normal skin had pimple outbreak after using the French Green Clay version(gasp)

Conclusion

My conclusion is that I will give the konjac sponge a miss forever. Because of my acne-prone skin, I am not able to use those scrubs with little granules as they cause me to breakout. I still have my worries on those mechanical brushes, such as Clarisonic, as there’s no long term studies. And in the beauty industry, you can make many claims without much proof. Instead of using physical exfoliants like sponges, I use chemical exfoliants instead. And the chemical exfoliant I use is Skinlycious Glow Exfoliant. It has salicylic acid that goes deep to dissolve clogs and mandelic acid to remove surface dead skin cells.
